Affinity for Flavor

Where it started

Growing up in the kitchen

Like many of you, I grew up spending much of my time in my family’s kitchen. At the end of every day my family flocked to the bar seating in our kitchen to sit and talk while dinner was being cooked. My parents were constantly tossing me a cutting board and a knife to help with the prep work, or recruiting me to man the cooktop and stir for them.

If I wasn’t chopping, I was watching—and that meant learning. Eventually I was cooking full meals, and developing my skills in the kitchen. I took those skills with me to college and begun to expand my food-focused horizons.

Fending for myself

Having to feed yourself while away at college can come as a shock to some, but that experience is what gave cooking a permanent place in my life.

Having a gluten sensitivity meant I couldn’t live off ramen and frozen pizza like so many students around me did. Instead, my years away at college were filled with Pinterest searches and experimental nights in the kitchen of my one-bedroom apartment. I cooked almost every night—something that’s uncommon for most college students—and found I had a true talent.

The cooking didn’t stop when I moved home. I needed to cook, and that need is why I created this blog.

About the Author

In my work life, I am a young professional in the advertising industry specializing in paid advertising placement. I graduated from Washington State University in 2020 with a degree in advertising and communication technology. I am still learning and making my way in this ever-complicated, pandemic-era job market.

In my personal life, I wear many hats. I am a daughter, a sister, and a cat mom. I am a biker, a kayaker, and a barre student. I am a beach bum, and a traveler. I am a fashionista, interior design wiz, and I am irreversibly addicted to Pinterest. I am a history geek, a friend, and most obviously—a self-taught cook.

I have moved a few times, leaving me with more than one place I call home. My early years were spent in the blissful suburbia that is Westlake Village, California. My family also spent some time in Seattle, which is what lead me to attend college over in Western Washington. Go Cougs!

I am living now with my parents in Ventura, California, looking to make my way in the advertising world. Cooking is my therapeutic relief, and I hope that my hobby brings others the same joy and inspiration in the kitchen that I feel.
